The first quarter of 2026 saw US equities lag those of other global markets amid geopolitical tensions and disappointing economic news on both inflation and unemployment. Around the world there was a decided shift to lower-risk equities as technology’s luster faded, raising questions about the valuations of AI-related companies and the associated capital spending. Predicted equity volatility started to tick up, although it remains low compared with history.

Then, in March, an attack on Iran changed the underlying dynamics, reawakening the specter of soaring consumer prices and tight monetary conditions. The heightened geopolitical uncertainty and inflation expectations could add further fuel to gold’s meteoric rise, turning the precious metal into the riskiest asset in a multi-asset portfolio, despite its perceived status as a safe haven and wealth preserver.

Please join our webinar in which we will discuss the issues driving risk in equities, bonds, currencies and commodities, and how they may have impacted your portfolios.
